Beautiful Annapolis

Presented by the first mate:

We pulled into Annapolis in a driving rain...and I was on a conference call. Oh well, we managed to dock without incident. We were at the city dock, in the heart of downtown. We had a great dinner on Friday night at Middleton Tavern. Sarah picked it based on its roaring fireplace. Given that we had been boating in 50 degrees with rain, it felt wonderful to get warm by a fire while having a great dinner with great friends. Is it really May?

On Saturday morning we got up and went out to breakfast - let someone else make the coffee! Olive was with us. This is a dog friendly town! After breakfast, we walked the grounds at the Naval Academy. Olive chased squirrels up the massive old trees.

I had an appointment to get my hair cut at 11:00, so after our walk around the Academy we dropped Olive off at the boat and then Ron walked me to my haircut. He went to a local barber shop for his cut while I went to an Aveda salon. Both good cuts, but I think Ron's may have been cheaper.

Main Street is lined with shops and restaurants. This is such a beautiful city, and one can imagine how it looked 250 years ago. We had lunch on the boat and then did a little shopping. Then we came back and sat on the bow of our boat and watched all the boats go by as we drank mint juleps for the Derby. The city dock has a channel down the middle that is called "Ego Alley." Appropriately named, since many boats just parade down the center and back into the bay. Talk about "Look at Me"...

We were lucky to meet some of Marty Puryear's boat broker friends. When we arrived on Friday, they brought us beer, wine, and friendship. On Saturday, they brought me a 41 foot Backcove brand yacht, but Ron told me to stop looking! I returned their hospitality with some of my homemade mint juleps during the Derby.

Because the weather was dicey for moving the boat, we decided to spend Sunday in Annapolis. I had the best Mother's Day I could hope for without my children. Ron made my coffee, did the laundry, and then I went on a run by myself at the Naval Academy. OMG, I thought we had seen it the day before, but we had only seen around 30% of it. I ran all around the campus. What a beautiful campus. It was amazing.

Ron and I then went out to brunch and more shopping (no worries, I am only buying more sweatshirts and clothes for the grandchildren). We finished with a meal onboard and TAPS. Tomorrow we leave for Chesapeake City on the Maryland/Delaware border.

We've had a great stop in Annapolis. The weather has finally turned for the better and it's time for us to get underway toward New York and the Statue of Liberty.

  1. Our favorite place in the whole US
Good restaurants. Great town so full of history. Have they built the Annapolis yacht club back since the fire? Enjoying your adventure having been to all the places you have been writing about when chartering on the Chesapeake. Lucretia and Dan
